The sweet, caring, funny, awesome Nainoa was diagnosed with stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma. Nainoa had been suffering from extreme back pain a month prior to being diagnosed and lost the feeling in his legs. Upon arriving at the ER he had emergency surgery to attempt to release the impact of the pressure of the tumor on his spine as there was concern of paralysis. Fortunately, the surgery seems to have been successful. Further testing has shown the cancer is in his leg, shoulder, lungs and spine.
Nainoa has one of the kindest hearts of anyone you’ll ever meet. Unfortunately he and Kaelyn, his bride of less than a year, have a long road ahead of them as they begin the fight for Nainoa’s life. This past year has been especially challenging as Nainoa’s mourned the loss of both of his parents.
A couple weeks ago Nainoa and Kaelyn returned from a long awaited vacation in Hawaii. Many of Nainoa’s childhood summers were spent on the island of Kauai and the spirit of aloha runs through him. They had a wonderful trip. Some of their favorite memories are: relaxing at the beach, eating amazing shaved ice, visiting the royal palace, Chinatown, the Laie Hawaii Temple, hanging out at the swap meet, and spending time with beloved family. Before Nainoa’s mom, Sissy, passed away she had a dream of making it to the islands one last time but unfortunately wasn’t able to. Being there with that in mind made this trip extra special for Nainoa and Kaelyn.
Nainoa is now completing his 8th round of chemotherapy treatments. His schedule consists of a 2 day chemo treatment followed by a week off, then a 5 day treatment and another week off. The 2 day treatments aren’t too bad for him but the 5 day treatments are very hard as the type of drug they use is the strongest available for his type of cancer. He has 6 more rounds of chemo to go. The good news is that the cancer is responding to his treatments. The reality is that only 10% of patients with metastasized Ewings Sarcoma live past 5 years and when Nainoa takes a break from chemo his tumors grow. This is hard to hear but also allows Nainoa and Kaelyn to focus on living each day to the fullest.
Nainoa celebrated his 25th birthday at the end of April. His birthday was on April 23rd and we planned a family party with his favorite foods: teriyaki chicken and beef, rice, and, of course, mac salad! We all love Nainoa so much and hope & pray that his 25th year is filled with great progress against his cancer.
As medical bills are always a challenge we’ve decided to keep our goal on this account more fluid as the road ahead is seemingly long and uncertain and as you can imagine, overwhelming. All funds donated to Nainoa’s GoFundMe are used solely for medical expenses and appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.
Nainoa, Kaelyn, and their families truly appreciate the kindness, love, prayers, and support.
